Grammy nominated Melbourne contemporary soul outfit, Hiatus Kaiyote is a collaboration between four individuals (Nai Palm/singer-guitarist, Paul Bender/bass-production, Simon Mavin/keys-synths, Perrin Moss/drums-production). Their sound references a swathe of influences – electric, acoustic, futuristic, psychedelic, progressive, soothing and urgent – slipping in and out genre and defying definition. Nai Palm, the devastatingly talented frontwoman of these self-proclaimed peddlers of “multidimensional polyrhythmic gangster shit”, gifts us with her insights in this week’s Savvy Seven.
1. The best live music venues in my area are…
It’s a cross between whether a venue has good sound versus general vibe. For sound: Hifi Bar, The Corner, The Forum. For vibe: The Evelyn, Bar Open, Old Bar.
2. The music scene in my hometown is…
Melbourne’s music scene is in a word, original. There’s so many dope unique bands and artists coming from this creative melting pot of a city. It’s super inspiring.
3. My top tip for artists who self-manage is…
I have two mangers so who am I to project to people – however, don’t create music to accommodate other people’s tastes that aren’t your own. Get your shit on the Internet. Set up a Bandcamp. Try to interact with fans as much as you can because they are your community and support network in a lot of ways.
4. In my opinion, the most important issue facing the music industry is… (and what do you think would be a good solution?)
I guess streaming , it’s ruined the recording income of artists – but the positive side is that more people are exposed to your music. There is a great deal of sexism, racism and homophobia throughout the music industry. That is slowly but surely changing, but the only way people become exposed to it is if artists express the dialogue.
5. When on the road, my favourite pit stops are…
I love thrifting, treasure hunting, and if we are somewhere particularly magical nature wise then I try to make an effort to get amongst it. No staples however. I love change, new scenery.
6. My biggest career mistake has been…
Probably fucking up Nakamarra at the Grammys, but Pharrell Williams liked it anyway, so I guess it was fine. There’s no real mistakes, only opportunities to learn and evolve into a more seasoned artist.
7. My best advice for emerging artists is…
Do you. Trust yourself. There is something for everyone, so for exactly the thing you want to do and achieve there will be someone in the world who has been waiting for that exact form of expression. The Internet/ universe will find a way to connect you. “What you seek is already seeking you” – Rumi
