Oli Bayston is a Londoner with many talents. He’s worked with producer Dan Carey (Bat For Lashes, Franz Ferdinand, Hot Chip) as an engineer and assistant, played keyboard on multiple peer’s LPs, played on Steve Mason‘s live tour, and even “helped out” with some of Lily Allen‘s tracks. Boxed In is his first solo venture, named for a Francis Bacon painting, formed in 2013 and originally signed to Moshi Moshi, the same label that once housed Disclosure, Florence + The Machine, and Lykke Li. His eponymous debut album, Boxed In, is a colourful and textured venture that explores pop, house music, and rock – and NME asserts that it will “enhance your life”. We approached the prolific musician and producer about coming on board as the very first international act to participate in our Savvy Seven series. Read on to find out what Bayston had to say…
The best live music venues in my area are…
Oslo in Hackney, because it’s near my house! And because it has a great sound system, and excellent food downstairs.
The music scene in my hometown is…
Thriving. London is home to many of the world’s greatest artists and I feel honoured to be part of that community. Particularly East London.
My top business tip for new artists is…
BE HONEST.
In my opinion, the most important issue facing the music industry is…
Homogeneity – the industry promotes and encourages lack of variety in the pop world. But being different will define you as an artist, and allow you to be excited about what you do and [for it to be] enjoyed by others.
When on the road, my favourite pit stops are…
Always on the look out for a great country pub. Beats UK service stations any day. Fresh air and a local pint!
My biggest career mistake has been…
Not starting Boxed In earlier
My best advice for emerging artists is…
BE HONEST
